When Thomas P. (Tip) O'Neill Jr. (D-Mass.) retired in December
after 10 years as speaker of the House, more changed on Capitol Hill
than the occupant of the speaker's office. As is the case whenever a
major office changes hands in Washington, the new speaker, Rep. Jim
Wright (D-Tex.), brought in his own team to help him operate in one
of the most powerful positions in government.
Several of Wright's top aides have been with him for years and
served together on his staff when he was House majority leader during
O'Neill's tenure as speaker. All are experienced in the ways of
Capitol Hill. As a group and as individuals, they have maintained
low profiles, which is the way Wright likes it.
