Jim and Tammy Bakker returned here today to a sumptuous TV studio
where they once held court-appearing via videotape on overhead
monitors from their exile in Palm Springs, Calif. They were breaking
silence for the first time since Bakker resigned his wealthy TV
ministry Friday over a sexual interlude with a church secretary seven
years ago.
A hush fell over the overflow crowd.
First came a filibuster for forgiveness, then dozens of men and
women reached for tissues to wipe away the tears.
"I did not have a love affair," said Bakker, referring to a
hotel escapade his lawyer described as lasting no longer than 15
