Article: Greek Leader Makes Use Of Aegean Sea Dispute; Even Critics Line Up Behind Papandreou

As a potential major world conflict, the threat of war between Turkey and Greece late last week proved somewhat overrated; it evaporated as quickly as it appeared.

But the incident seems to have proved a lucky break-now that it is all over-for embattled Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou. Although few here allege that the socialist leader sought to provoke the Aegean crisis, there is widespread agreement that the incident served his political purposes nicely.

"I think that Papandreou has fooled the people once again," said Helen Vlachos, the respected conservative editor of the Athens daily newspaper Kathimerini. "He is very good at that."
