Article: New Materials Developed to Carry Electricity Without Energy Loss

Physicists in the United States and overseas have opened what they call a new frontier in technology: the development of everyday materials that will carry electricity without losing energy.

Scientists say the substances-called superconductors-will have vast applications for medical diagnoses and commercial electronics, and could help power high-speed trains suspended in magnetic fields and guide particle-beam weapons.

Most important, the materials could eventually save billions of dollars in energy costs by retaining the enormous amount of the world's electricity lost in transmission lines.
