Lou Franceschetti's goal 12 seconds into overtime brought the
Washington Capitals an improbable 6-5 victory over the New Jersey
Devils tonight.
As he headed for the net, Franceschetti was hooked by Perry
Anderson, who inadvertently kicked the puck into the net.
The Capitals' second sudden-death triumph in 24 hours enabled
them to conclude the regular season with a nine-game unbeaten streak.
All was not rosy for the Capitals, however. Defenseman Scott
Stevens received a match penalty for a head-butting exchange with Al
Stewart and faces additional disciplinary action that could include a
suspension for Wednesday's opening playoff game.
