SANTIAGO, Chile, Nov. 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a
statement by Andrea Kavanagh, manager of the Take a Pass on Chilean
Sea Bass Campaign:
"Today, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered
Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) initially passed a non-
binding resolution on toothfish (Chilean Sea Bass) that offers no new
protections for the species and guarantees the continuation of
unsustainable illegal fishing. A final vote will take place later in
plenary. The proposal for an Appendix II listing, submitted by
Australia, and supported by fishermen and environmentalists alike,
was put forward and immediately withdrawn with no debate.
