On H Street NE, construction crews work on a just begun office
building and town house complex. Nearby, at the just opened
suburban-style Dart Drug store, neighborhood residents line up at
the cash register with gardening tools and bottles of shampoo in
hand.
And in small stores scattered among the boarded-up buildings, new
merchants satisfy the whims of customers seeking ice cream cones and
antique jewelry, paint supplies and bathroom fixtures.
The H Street corridor between Second and 14th streets NE is
emerging from a 30-year slump. Once one of the city's most important
shopping districts, H Street started to decline in the 1950s and its
business life almost disappeared after the riots ...
