Rudolph Pyatt's column on the bottle bill initiative {"Corking
the Bottle Bill," Business, April 3} once again mindlessly repeats
the assertions of the business interests opposed to the campaign.
Just as auto manufacturers seek to escape the blame for auto-safety
problems, so Mr. Pyatt and the bottling industry wish to deny that
they create and promote litter when they turn out an endless stream
of aluminum, glass and plastic containers, nearly all of which could
be recycled.
Mr. Pyatt fails to cite the benefits the bottle bill could
bring-a reduction in can and bottle litter by more than 75 percent;
safer streets and playgrounds for pedestrians, children and
bicyclists; a lessening of ...
