When it comes to design and fashion trends, Americans traditionally have looked to Europe for inspiration. And in the late 1920s, when Americans looked across the Atlantic Ocean, they found Art Deco, a powerful decorative style that emphasized geometric shapes and elegant surface design.

Although the term Art Deco did not find its way into the English language until the late 1960s, the decorative style to which it refers had a profound impact on American design from the late 1920s to the early 1940s, turning up in skyscrapers, book covers, radios, silver and furniture.
