Article: Gogong Beats Top-Weighted Flatterer

Four-time steeplechase champion Flatterer found the mud and the weight to be too much at the Middleburg steeplechase races today, losing by 10 lengths to Gogong.

With a 178-pound handicap, the most weight he ever has carried, Flatterer faltered to third. "Every horse has his breaking point and he just had a lot of weight," trainer Jonathan Sheppard said of Flatterer.

Gregg Morris rode the winner, who led the 2 1/2-mile, $25,000 race from start to finish.

"He's a big galloping horse and he likes the mud," Morris said of Gogong. "Plus, he was getting 28 pounds from the horse to beat, so it really worked out well."
