Cook County Board President John H. Stroger, Jr., Cook County
Commissioner Roberto Maldonado, and Cook County Department of Public
Health Chief Operating Officer Stephen A. Martin, Jr., Ph.D., M.P.H.,
will join public health advocates at a press conference at 11 a.m.
Thursday, April 1, at the County Building to discuss the benefits of
Cook County's 82 cents a pack cigarette tax increase which takes
effect April 1. The increase is expected to prevent 50,000 Cook
County kids from starting to smoke, spur 30,000 smokers to quit, and
save $850 million in long-term health care costs due to smoking.
