Article: Italy Sets Elections For June 14; Christian Democrats' Maneuver Succeeds

President Francesco Cossiga tonight dissolved Italy's parliament and called national elections, to be held June 14, just four days after a scheduled economic summit conference of leading industrial nations at Venice.

Cossiga acted tonight after Prime Minister Amintore Fanfani's 11-day-old government succeeded in the task for which it was constituted: losing a vote of confidence that allowed Cossiga to order elections a year early.

Fanfani's government was defeated in the House of Deputies by 240 to 131 with 193 abstentions after a week of acrimonious debate over whether the parliament, which was elected in 1983 for five years and gave Italy almost four years of stable government, still ...
