The discovery of the latest case of "mad cow" disease in the U.S.
should disprove the adage that "ignorance is bliss." For years, the
U.S. government has been obfuscating the issue of mad cow disease
(aka bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE) in the U.S., hoping to
forestall consumer hysteria like the one that caused the financial
collapse of the British beef industry.
But the word is out, and Americans need to listen up. Mad cow
disease is present in the U.S., and from the look of things, it's
