While most Kentuckians focused on Churchill Downs today, one Blue
Grass horseman came here to win Virginia's biggest race, the Virginia
Gold Cup.
Ozymandias, owned and ridden by Bill Wofford of Lexington, Ky.,
won the classic four-mile timber race by a length. It was the first
four-mile race for both horse and rider.
"He was still pulling hard at the end, he wouldn't quit," Wofford
said. "If he were a football player, you could play him in all four
quarters, no matter what."
Ozymandias did not take the lead until the stretch run, after the
last of 23 fences. The early pace was set by Bibbit, ridden by
