The black musician has created an entirely new music-in a style
peculiarly Afro-American-that today spreads its influence over the
entire world,'" says D. Antoinette Handy, assistant director of music
at the National Endowment for the Arts, quoting musicologist Ilene
Southern. "And ever since his arrival in the New World he has
enriched with his contributions the European-based musical traditions
of the nation."
Classical compositions by seven renowned composers will be
featured during the third annual "Music of the Black American
Composer" concert, which will be held today in the National Museum of
American History's Hall of Musical Instruments.
