The idea was to go on a vacation as opposed to a family trip.
Put another way, it was a grown-up version of dropping out. Just for
a week, but no children. I suggested Paris. The friend with whom I
was plotting this fantasy suggested West Virginia. We were clearly
dealing with an acute wavelength differential, which was minimized
somewhat by the fact that neither of us wanted the hassles of
airlines, baggage, airports and so on. The idea was to avoid coming
back exhausted from a trip-simply to get away and enjoy a few days of
rest and relaxation.
And we succeeded.
