More than 7,850 Prince George's County high school seniors are
becoming high school graduates this spring. Diploma ceremonies began
last week at Comcast Center and Show Place Arena and continue today
and tomorrow.
But the graduation count doesn't tell the whole story.
On Sept. 30, 2002, state data show there were 12,118 freshmen in
Prince George's high schools. Simple division suggests that about 65
percent of those ninth-graders finished school on time with a
Maryland diploma, and 35 percent didn't.
With graduation and dropout rates, however, nothing is simple.
Many of the 2002 freshmen moved elsewhere. Some were held back
