The reason I helped my mother run the tag sale is that I have
always felt a fairly strong debt of gratitude toward her for caring
for me as a child and continuing to see human potential in me even
after various incidents, such as the time in high school when Carmine
Labriola threw this major party, after which Lanny Watts and I passed
out at 2:30 a.m. on-out of all the lawns we might have selected-the
lawn belonging to the chief of police of Armonk, N.Y. (This party
became a front-page item in the newspaper. "Chief Hergenhan said he
realized the seriousness of the situation," the item said, "when he
found two intoxicated youths on his lawn.")
