Article: Simons Regains Helm Of D.C. Teachers Union

William Simons, first president of the Washington Teachers' Union, has regained control of the union that tossed him out of office just two years ago.

Simons ousted union President Harold Fisher Jr. and defeated four other candidates in an election conducted by mail, according to the American Arbitration Association, which handled the balloting.

Simons drew 37 percent of the vote to Fisher's 26 percent; union staff member Regina Gilchrist got 22 percent. Other candidates received much less support. Of those eligible to vote, 46 percent cast ballots.
