American officials investigating the attack on the USS Stark
arrive here Monday on a visit that is likely to have significant
impact on the course of Iraq's air war on shipping in the Persian
Gulf and on Iraqi-U.S. relations, diplomatic sources said today.
Iraq has apologized for what it described as an accidental attack
on the ship and has assured U.S. officials here that the pilot who
fired the Exocet missile that set the Stark ablaze May 17 and other
responsible military officials will be made available for
questioning.
But the Iraqi conversations with the investigating team, led by
Rear Adm. David N. Rogers, are certain to turn quickly to the
increased state of alert and changes in ...
