Article: S. Leone Endorses UN War Crimes Tribunal

The Sierra Leonean parliament has ratified the establishment of a special war crimes tribunal backedby the UN to try those charged with war crimes during the civil war in the west African country, according to a report reaching here on Thursday from Freetown, capital of Sierra Leone.

According to the report, the lawmakers approved the motion on Wednesday, paving the way for setting up of the war crimes court akin to the international war crimes tribunal for Rwanda.

While introducing the bill, Justice Minister Solomon Berewa said that the court will "prosecute persons who bear the greatest responsibility for serious human rights violations and abuses of international and Sierra Leonean law."
