Article: Vitamin D Crucial in Preventing Colon Cancer: Study

Vitamin D may help protect against colon cancer by detoxifying cancer-triggering chemicals that are released during the digestion of high-fat foods, a new U.S. study suggests.

"Our findings suggest a new look at the relationship between nutrition and cancer, particularly how vitamin D protects against colon cancer," David Mangelsdorf at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute said Thursday in a statement.

Mangelsdorf and colleagues found that Vitamin D can bind to a receptor on intestinal cells that also binds to a bile acid calledLCA.
