The Myanmar military government unconditionally released Aung San
Suu Kyi, General Secretary of the opposition National League for
Democracy (NLD), from house arrest on May 6.
It was an important step taken by the government to ease the sharp
contradiction between it and the NLD and to realize the country's
national reconciliation.
The Myanmar government claimed that the day, May 6, 2002, marked a
new page for the Myanmar people.
