Armed Forces of the Philippines Southern Command chief Ernesto Carolina on Monday downplayed speculations that sympathizers of Abu Sayyaf spokesman Abu Sabaya might avenge his death.

"I think there are more people who hate Sabaya than who sympathize with him," Carolina told reporters, adding that his death allows the military to focus its operations on other key leaders of the group, the Philippine Daily Inquirer on-line news reported.

The information provided by Abu Sabaya's followers nabbed in the clash on June 21 is crucial in guiding the military operations,Carolina said, adding that they are closely tracking Abu Sabaya's "affiliates".
