Zambian president calls for lifting of Chiluba's immunity

LUSAKA, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa Thursday disclosed glaring embezzlement of huge public funds by former president Frederick Chiluba's administration.

Addressing a special session of parliament, Mwanawasa challenged parliament to exercise its constitutional powers regarding the issue of lifting the former president's immunities.

"It is unfortunate that some leaders are saying I must lift Dr Frederick Chiluba's immunity. It is the prerogative of this House. It is up to you to take action. I have offered you the facts," said Mwanawasa.

"They (Chiluba and senior aides) must answer certain charges, ...
