Libyan leader arrives in Malawi

LUSAKA, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Libyan leader Col. Muammar Ghaddafi arrived in Malawi Tuesday as part of his southern African tour since last week's launch of the African Union (AU) in Durban, South Africa, the Malawi News Agency reported.

Ghaddafi, who flew from neighboring Mozambique, was welcomed by Malawi President Bakili Muluzi in the administrative capital Lilongwe, as more than 5,000 people cheered on his arrival.

Several placards proclaiming "Ghaddafi champion of African Unity" greeted the Libyan leader.
