Chronology: Major events of Southern African Development Community

LUANDA, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is expected to hold its 2002 annual summit meeting here from Sept. 26 to Oct. 3.

During the summit, issues like how to accelerate the process of regional integration will be discussed in order to speed up the development of SADC and improve its ability to deal with crisis in the region.

Here is a chronology of the major events of the SADC, whose secretariat is in Gaborone, capital of Botswana.

July 1979: The first Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC) was held in Arusha, Tanzania, to harmonize development plans.
