Backgrounder: Brief introduction to Southern African Development Community

LUANDA, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Southern African Development Community (SADC) will hold its 2002 annual summit meeting here from Sept. 26 to Oct. 3.

The summit is set for accelerating the process of regional integration in a bid to speed up development and improve its ability to deal with crisis in the southern African region.

Following is a sketch of the SADC, which was established in August 1992 in Windhoek, Namibia, to replace the Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC).
