British consumer spending grows at lowest rate

LONDON, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Consumer spending in Britain's shops had grown at its slowest rate for 18 months ending July, figures from the Office for National Statistics of Britain showed Friday.

That rate of increase was the slowest since January 2001, when consumer spending went up by 3.9 percent over the previous month.

The figures showed that retail sales were 0.3 percent higher in July than in June, less than a bigger anticipated recovery.
