Spanish authorities rule out hijacking attempt

MADRID, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Spanish authorities said Friday the incident occurring in the Colombian Avianca airliner earlier in the day was simply an "alteration to public order" and ruled out it was a hijacking attempt.

Vice Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said the protagonist in the event, an individual of Spanish nationality and Cuban origin, named Perfecto Vazquez, is under arrest.

As a consequence of the incident, the Avianca airliner in a Mexico-Colombia-Spain flight, landed at the Torrejon Air Base escorted by a Spanish Air force F-18 fighter. The airliner will be taken to the Barajas International Airport in Madrid.
