African leaders resolved to build prosperous continent: Mbeki

DURBAN, South Africa, July 9 (Xinhua) -- South African President Thabo Mbeki expressed here Tuesday that African leaders will honor the commitments as the leaders made and agreed to establish the African Union (AU).

Mbeki, who is also the first Chairman of the just-launched AU, said that Africa "is taking the giant step forward" in building a peace, strong and developmental African continent.

The holding of the last summit meeting of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the first summit of the AU constitutes a special victory celebration for the African continent as a whole, according to Mbeki.
