Zambian president pledges to revive agricultural sector

LUSAKA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has said that his government was committed to resuscitating the agricultural sector in the country.

Mwanawasa said this Saturday when he officially opened the 76th agricultural and commercial show.

He said this had been shown through the increased budgetary allocation to the agricultural sector in this year's budget.

In the 2002 budget, a total of 231 billion kwacha (57.75 million US dollars) was earmarked for agriculture.

However, He said this commitment would be compromised by the diversion of resources earmarked for investment to emergency relief programs.
