UCJ appeals for release of jailed Turkish Cypriot journalists

NICOSIA, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Union of Cypriot Journalists (UCJ) appealed on Thursday to the international community to make efforts to secure the release of two Turkish Cypriot journalists sentenced to jail in northern Cyprus for libel.

A court in the Turkish Cypriot area passed in the day a six- month jail sentence against Sever levent, editor-in-chief of the main opposition daily Afrika, and journalist Mahmoud Ener for alleged defamatory articles against Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.
