Zambian president defends Kaunda's Iraq visit
LUSAKA, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa
Thursday defended former president Kenneth Kaunda's recent visit to
Iraq, saying Kaunda wanted to persuade the Iraqi leader Saddam
Hussein to allow UN weapon inspectors into that country.
President Mwanawasa said Kaunda did not go to Iraq as a
representative of the Zambian people and that Kaunda and Saddam were
close friends.
He told a press briefing that Kaunda had called him before his
departure to Iraq to let him know of his visit.
Mwanawasa said that during the conversation they had, he
expressed concern that the trip by Kaunda might raise
misunderstandings.
