Five African countries expected to bid for 2010 World Cup finals

CAIRO, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Five African countries are expected to meet Tuesday's end-of-year deadline for candidates to stage the 2010 World Cup finals.

Egypt, Libya, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia have all said they intend to bid for the first-ever World Cup finals to be held on African soil.

Prospective candidates have until midnight on Tuesday to state their intentions to world soccer's governing body FIFA.

FIFA's headquarters in Switzerland are closed for the New Year holiday until next Monday when the official list of candidates will be made available.
