Chile suspends meat imports from Brazil

SANTIAGO, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chile's Agricultural and Ranching Service (SAG) Friday ordered the suspension of meat imports from the Brazilian state of Matto Grosso do Sul because of suspicion of foot- and-mouth disease contagion.

The SAG director, Carlos Parra, explained that the preventive suspension of the meat imports was due to the confirmation of the foot-and-mouth virus in Paraguay, which borders Brazil on Matto Grosso do Sul.

The service said the measure would last until Brazil's veterinary authorities handed over detailed reports on the evolution of the disease in the affected area, as well as on measures adopted to cope with it.
