Chile suspends meat imports from Brazil
SANTIAGO, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chile's Agricultural and Ranching
Service (SAG) Friday ordered the suspension of meat imports from the
Brazilian state of Matto Grosso do Sul because of suspicion of foot-
and-mouth disease contagion.
The SAG director, Carlos Parra, explained that the preventive
suspension of the meat imports was due to the confirmation of the
foot-and-mouth virus in Paraguay, which borders Brazil on Matto
Grosso do Sul.
The service said the measure would last until Brazil's veterinary
authorities handed over detailed reports on the evolution of the
disease in the affected area, as well as on measures adopted to cope
with it.
