Japan's publishing industry to use IC tag by 2005

TOKYO, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Japan's publishing industry will start by the end of the year a project aimed to use integrated circuit (IC) tags into all books sold in Japan by 2005, Kyodo News reported Thursday.

The use of the IC tags is said to boost industry earnings by annual 50 billion yen (417 million US dollars) or more in the sector because it will improve inventory control and prevent shoplifting.

According to Kyodo, the tags can be implanted in book covers. They emit electronic waves encoded with data that receivers can pick up within a radius of one or two meters.
