Study shows carbon dioxide retards plant growth

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) can reduce plant growth when combined with other likely consequences of climate change, a study published in the Dec. 6 issue of Science concludes.

The study, conducted in Stanford University, raises questions about the prevailing view among scientists that global climate change may cause some crops and trees to grow bigger and faster.

The climate changes include higher temperatures, increased precipitation and increased nitrogen deposits in the soil.
