Galileo satellite navigation project to be based in Rome

ROME, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Galileo satellite navigation project, Europe's answer to the United States' unique Global Positioning System (GPS), is to be headquartered in Rome after all, Italian Education and Research Minister Letizia Moratti announced on Wednesday.

Moratti said Italy had to contend with stiff resistance from Germany but managed to put together an alliance with France, Britain and Spain to secure the project's headquarters for Galileo Industries.

Italy will be a co-leader of the project along with its three allies, putting in a 17.5 percent stake.
