CANBERRA, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Defending champion Jennifer Capriati of the United States became the surprising loser when she was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Monday.

In the first grand slam event of the year, the third-seeded Capriati looked first in command of the match but was toppled eventually by 90th-ranked Marlene Weingartner of Germany 2-6, 7-6 and 6-4.
