UN chief welcomes cease-fire in Nepal

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary- General Kofi Annan on Thursday welcomed a cease-fire between the Nepali government and anti-government guerrillas.

In a statement issued through his spokesman, Annan also extended warm welcome to the Nepali government's intention to convene all- party talks, the spokesman said in a statement.

The Nepali government announced a truce with the rebels Wednesday, which took effect on the same day. Both sides are expected to resume negotiations within days.
