Russia opposes expanding US military presence in Korean Peninsula

MOSCOW, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said on Tuesday that Russia is against expansion of the US military presence in the Korean Peninsula.

"We are convinced that any expansion of the US military presence on the Korean Peninsula and around it as an element of increasing pressure on North Korea (DPRK) would play a negative role," Yakovenko was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying in a statement.

"This would not advance a desired settlement of the problem through negotiations but could provoke a retaliatory response instead," he noted.
