France to raise official development assistance to Africa: Chirac

PARIS, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- President Jacques Chirac announced Thursday that France will increase its official development assistance (ODA) with most of them flowing to Africa.

Speaking at the opening session of the 22nd Africa-France summit in Paris, Chirac said the ODA will increase by half between now and 2007, rising to 0.5 percent of French GDP.

"Our goal is to raise this to 0.7 percent by 2012. Africa, already the prime beneficiary of our aid, will receive more than half of this new flow," Chirac said with the presence of 42 African heads of state and government, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the interim
