Nikkei plunges to new 20-year low in Tokyo

TOKYO, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo's Nikkei average plunged to another 20-year low Tuesday, closing below 7,900 for the first time since Jan. 25, 1983, amid growing concerns about a looming war in Iraq.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 179.83 points, or 2.24 percent, to close at an intraday low of 7,862.43, its lowest level since Jan. 25, 1983, when the index finished at 7,803.18.

The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) fell 13.90 points, or 1.77 percent, to 770.62.
