Writethru: Bush declares end of major combat operations in Iraq

WASHINGTON, May 1 (Xinhua) -- United States President George W. Bush said on Thursday that "major combat operations" in Iraq have ended and that US and its allies "have prevailed" in Iraq.

"Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed," Bush said in his speech on board the homebound USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.

The remarks were made some six weeks after Bush announced the beginning of the war in Iraq in an Oval Office speech on March 19.

"In this battle, we have fought for the cause of liberty, and for the peace of the world," Bush said.
