Roundup: privatization pushes communications development in Uganda

KAMPALA, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's telecommunications sector has witnessed a considerable development in recently years as telephone subscribers jumped from 230,000 in 2000 to over 500,000 at present.

There were approximately 65,000 telephone lines or 0.3 lines for every 100 Ugandans before the liberalization of the telecommunications sector in 1996. However, the country presently boasted of three telephone companies on the market and together, they boast of over 565,099 phone lines for both mobile and land lines.
