New York residents face higher health risk near toxic waste sites

NEW YORK, June 15 (Xinhua) -- New Yorkers who live near toxic waste sites face a higher risk of developing cancer and respiratory illnesses, said a report released Sunday.

Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum urged the state legislature to earmark fund to clean the dumps after he analyzed data from the city's Health Department.

According to the study, people who live near the so-called Superfund sites in the city have a higher rate of such illnesses as asthma, bronchitis and breast cancer. While noting the study does not offer conclusive evidence that the sites make people sick, Gotbaum said her office is planning to ...
