US space shuttle manager to resign

WASHINGTON, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Ron Dittemore, head of the space shuttle program at the US space agency NASA, announced Wednesday that he will step down from the position at the end of the investigation into the Columbia space shuttle tragedy.

"My decision to leave the space shuttle program has been a very difficult one but is a decision I began struggling with long before the tragedy of the Columbia accident," Dittemore said in a statement.

"The timing of my departure is based on what I believe will allow for the smoothest management transition possible, as the pace of work to return the shuttle to flight begins to ramp up."
