UN mission compound in eastern DRC under attack

UNITED NATIONS, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Thousand of students and militia stormed a United Nations mission compound in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and put it under siege late Friday, a UN spokesman said.

A UN peacekeeping officer was slightly injured and some UN property destroyed during the attack in the volatile town of Bunia, spokesman Fred Eckhard told reporters.

The mob was first dispersed by UN troops, who fired warning shots in the air, but it returned to lay siege to the mission soon after, he said.
