AT HOME
Insulate beyond the attic
Energy experts say many old homes need special foam insulation
injected into the walls. For an average Wisconsin home, that would
cost $1,664 but yield annual savings of $116 on energy bills and
save 1,555 pounds of carbon dioxide.
Buy Energy Star appliances
According to Focus on Energy, a homeowner who buys Energy Star
appliances - a washing machine, dishwasher, refrigerator and 50
compact-fluorescent light bulbs - would save $225 a year on energy
bills.
Earn a tax break
Take advantage of federal energy-efficiency tax credits, though
these might expire soon, depending on action this month in Congress.
